This was especially true early in his first term as he toured the world and provided a stark and hopeful contrast to what had come before.
To read this account is to be reminded just what an impact Obama had. He was one of the architects of speeches that I listened to with obsessive admiration. He was integral to the Cairo speech, the response to the Arab Spring, Syria, Libya, Cuba, Iran, Bin Laden, and much more besides. He continued in much that guise for the next 10 years - putting him at the heart of many of the most consequential things that Obama did, or said, on the world stage. For this reason Rhodes focused on foreign policy and became a lead member of Obama’s speechwriting team. Suspicion of how and why this war had been conducted was the point of immediate commonality between and the future President. He had spent the years prior working on various bodies connected to the Iraq War. A lesson in this book is that behind the scenes people in American politics are ridiculously young. He was an early member of the team hoping to upset the odds and get a first-term senator from Illinois with a weird name elected to the world’s most powerful office. Rhodes went to work for then Senator Obama in 2007. As a fully paid up Obama fanboy (who has written about his legacy here or here) I wouldn’t have wanted it to be. It would be fair to say that it isn’t an objective account.
